An Autism Awareness Month Makeover

Here we go again.
Light it up blue.
Puzzle pieces everywhere.
Autism is more than a month long celebration.
It really is so much more.
We are so much more.
We are human beings.
I know for many of you I am stating the obvious, but for so many still we are a world problem.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this month was about connection?
Don’t get me wrong.
My diagnosis is challenging on the daily.
I can’t speak in a world that equates speaking to intelligence.
My body can be an uncooperative mess.
But I am here.
We are here.
We have so many gifts.
We have so much to contribute.
We are artists.
We are comedians.
We are writers.
Autism Awareness Month needs a makeover.
We are fully aware of our differences.
We are Autistic for life.
Not just April.
If the world wants to spotlight us this month, please put a dimmer switch on the light.
Instead, shift your mindset.
Believe there is more than meets the eye.
Be open to connection.
Connect with someone who is different from you.
Listen.
Not just to hear but to learn.
My letterboard is my voice.
It is freedom in laminate form.
My goals this month have not changed.
But oh, how I wish the world would change.
Love more.
Love others (everyone) as He loves you.
Presume competence.
Believe there is more inside each one of us.
Give us a chance.
Include us in the conversation - especially when it involves us.
Be kind.
Such a catch phrase nowadays.
But a kinder, more inclusive world is what I dream of.
All things are possible if we work together.
One step at a time.
My community with yours.
It can be “ours”.
One community together.
Who’s with me?
